De bibliotheek van de faculteit Engineering van Stanford University doet 85 procent van haar papieren publicaties weg. Na de verbouwing van de bibliotheek, die in augustus voltooid wordt, zal de Engineering Library nog maar 20.000 papieren boeken bevatten. De schappen met tijdschriften zullen grotendeels leeg blijven. De nieuwe bibliotheek zal zeven dagen per week en 24 uur per dag toegang bieden tot 12.000 digitale tijdschriften en 40.000 ebooks. De afgelopen vijf jaar heeft de Engineering Library onderzocht hoe vaak boeken werden uitgeleend. Een groot deel van de boeken bleek nauwelijks geraadpleegd te worden. Volgens Michael Keller, de directeur van de UB van Stanford, zal de bibliotheek in de toekomst waarschijnlijk helemaal geen boeken meer bevatten. Dat zegt Keller in een interview met National Public Radio (NPR). De docenten gebruiken al overwegend ebooks. Digitale boeken hebben volgens de docenten als voordeel dat ze het lesmateriaal en de opdrachten vaker kunnen actualiseren.
De Engineering Library is voorlopig de enige bibliotheek van Stanford die het grootste deel van de papieren collectie de deur uitdoet. Maar volgens Keller is de overstap naar digitaal materiaal onvermijdelijk gezien de manier waarop studenten werken: 'They write their papers online, and they read articles online, and many, many, many of them read chapters and books online. I can see in this population of students behaviors that clearly indicate where this is all going'. Hoofd Bibliotheek Helen Josephine zegt 'that in the past five years, most engineering periodicals have been moved online, making their print versions pretty obsolete — and books aren't doing much better. Students can now browse those periodicals from their laptops or mobile devices. With books being digitized and available through full text search capabilities, they can find that right formula quite easily'. Keller zegt dat 'the librarians determined which books to keep on the shelf by looking at how frequently a book was checked out. They found that the vast majority of the collection hadn't been taken off the shelf in five years. I expect that, eventually, there won't be any books on the shelves at all. As the world turns more and more, the items that appeared in physical form in previous decades and centuries are appearing in digital form'. Volgens James Plummer, dean van Stanford School of Engineering: 'Given the nature of engineering, that actually comes in handy. Engineering uses some basic formulas but is generally a rapidly changing field — particularly in specialties such as software and bioengineering. Traditional textbooks have rarely been able to keep up. That's why this faculty is increasingly using e-books. It allows our faculty to change examples to put in new homework problems … and lectures and things like that in almost a real-time way'. Het is nog slechts zelden dat bibliotheken hun boekenaantal zo rigoreus terugbrengen, maar het is duidelijk dat er meer bibliotheken zijn die een nieuwe toekomst in de grondverf zetten. Volgens een onderzoek van de Association of Research Libraries, 'American libraries are spending more of their money on electronic resources and less on books'. De Engineering Library van de Cornell University kondigde onlangs een gelijksoortig initiatief aan. De bibliothecarissen in Stanford 'are looking forward to spending less time with books and more time with people', zo zegt Josephine. 'That's what we're so excited about, the idea of actually offering more services, offering more workshops, offering more one-on-one time with students'.
