In 2010 produceren we wereldwijd 1.200.000.000.000 bits (1200 miljard GB) aan digitale informatie, zo blijkt uit onderzoek van IDC voor EMC. Dit zijn 75 miljard volledig gevulde iPads, of honderd jaar continu twitteren door iedereen op aarde. In 2009 werd er wereldwijd 800 biljoen GB (0.8 zettabytes) aan digitale informatie gecreëerd. Ondanks de recessie groeide de hoeveelheid digitale informatie met 62 procent ten opzichte van 2008. Het digitale universum (de totale hoeveelheid digitale informatie die per jaar wordt gecreëerd) zal tussen 2009 en 2020 met een factor 44 toenemen tot 35 zettabytes in 2020. Enkele opvallende resultaten uit het onderzoek:

• Momenteel creëren we 35 procent meer digitale informatie dan dat we kunnen opslaan. In de nabije toekomst groeit dit uit tot ruim 60 procent.

• 90 procent van de informatie die er over een individu bestaat wordt niet door de persoon zelf geproduceerd (informatie die wordt opgeslagen over internetgedrag, beveiligingscamera’s, betalingsopdrachten, telefoonverkeer, e.d).

• In 2020 is meer dan de helft van alle digitale informatie opgeslagen ‘in de cloud’ (online). De online beveiliging van informatie wordt daarom steeds belangrijker.

'Moreover, the number of files, images, records and other digital information containers will grow by a factor of 67, each needing to be managed, secured and protected. Despite this growth, the number of IT professionals globally will grow only by a factor of 1.4. The cumulative effect is driving CIOs to seek out new levels of agility, efficiency and control by moving quickly toward private cloud computing environments', zo stelt het EMC-persbericht. Enkele andere resultaten:

• 'Based on the use of cloud computing services by companies to reduce the portion of their IT budget devoted to legacy system maintenance, IDC estimates that the increase in IT dollars spent on innovation could drive more than $1 trillion in increased business revenues between now and the end of 2014. This projection will increase substantially as private cloud and other cloud computing models move into mainstream adoption.

• By 2020, the percent of digital information requiring security beyond baseline levels will grow from 30% to 50%.

• More than 70% of the Digital Universe is generated by individuals. But enterprises have responsibility for the storage, protection, and management of 80% of the Digital Universe. This enterprise liability will only increase as social networking and Web 2.0 technologies continue to invade the enterprise.
