Microsoft heeft voor de eerste keer zijn toevlucht genomen tot IBM om grote bedrijven te helpen met het oplossen van een groot probleem: het archiveren van e-mail voor e-discovery, compliance en audit. Vanaf 19 oktober bieden Microsoft en haar partners een nieuw IBM emailarchiveringsproduct aan, gebaseerd op hardware, software en dienstverlening. Als onderdeel van het pakket wordt MS Windows Server 2003 R2 software aangeboden, naast IBM server en storage hard- en software. Bij de levering van het pakket is de klant ervan gegarandeerd dat de software van beide partijen is getest. Naast het feit dat de email-archiveringsoplossing van IBM het mogelijk maakt email te archiveren voor governance en compliance, is het ook schaalbaar met de steeds groeiende hoeveelheid mail, verbetert het de 'return on investment' van investeringen in Storage en Retrieval, vermindert het backup- en restoretijd en maakt het snellere server-updates mogelijk. Het pakket maakt opslag mogelijk op tape en biedt diverse opties voor data-encryptie ter verhoging van de beveiliging. Volgens Gordon Arnold, technologiestrateeg van IBM, is het ' the first storage development partnership between Microsoft and IBM'.
'We've been doing some interoperational testing this year [with Microsoft], and we're cooperating in areas that we feel are win-win situations for our customers', zo zei Arnold. 'Microsoft is one of the few companies with a large enough market presence to make this kind of collaboration work'. 'The solution we're announcing is designed to address the mushrooming e-mail and storage management needs of businesses … and unlike the EMC Centera, this solution provides customers with a Windows-based e-mail archiving solution in their Windows environment, better leveraging their existing skills'. IBM levert een upgrade (met een ingebouwde zoekfunctionaliteit) van de bestaande IBM CommonStore Email Archiving Preload, geïntegreerd met IBM Systems Storage Archive Manager Software en IBM System Storage DS4200 Express disk storage system. De opslagcapaciteit daarvan varieert van 4 tot 8 TB. Het hele pakket zal vanaf het eerste kwartaal van 2007 verkrijgbaar zijn met een startprijs van $ 55.000. Dit kan worden aangevuld met een eMailSearch module voor $ 2.000. In een omgeving die sterke nadruk legt op compliance willen steeds meer organisaties verzekerd zijn van goede email-archivering, zo zegt Amy Wohl, van Wohl Associates in Merion Station, Pennsylvania. 'This is a good solution and is intended to be quick and easy to implement. It also allows cross-organizational searches [which are nearly impossible now], treating all of the archived e-mail as an unstructured data base', zo zegt ze. 'There are lots of Windows users [using both Microsoft Exchange and Lotus Domino] who could use this. Many Microsoft business partners are already IBM business partners, so it's easy to offer this solution. Microsoft business partners who do not currently have a relationship with IBM can easily enter a basic level partner relationship and sell the archiving offering. Because of the large number of users of Microsoft Exchange, selling just to a relatively small percentage of them should be a lucrative market'. Keith McCall, mede-oprichter van Azaleos, dat een product levert dat alle aspecten van de MS Exchange email-server automatiseert, vertelt dat 'this offering appears to contain services for deployment but not for actual monitoring, management or maintenance of the archiving solution once built. While e-mail infrastructure availability has become mission critical, e-mail has also become a record, discoverable and admissible in many courts around the world—whether stored in Microsoft Exchange or in an archive repository. Customers should carefully select the complete end-to-end solution that delivers maximum value and protection of this critical corporate asset'.
