Michio Kaku: Time, Cosmic Time

De BBC beschrijft het als volgt:  ‘We like to imagine that time is regular and eternal; the same everywhere and always. But is it? Are our assumptions true or are they illusions? Michio is on a mission to reveal the true nature of time itself, a journey that takes him from science to religion and from science fiction to philosophy. He discovers places where time beats at different rates, where time blurs, and even where time stands still. Michio creates a blueprint for a scientifically accurate time machine and tackles perhaps the biggest question of all, whether time is eternal. His exploration leads to a remarkable realisation. It seems that time itself evolves and time in the distant future of the universe might be so different to the time we know now that we might not recognise it as time at all’.

The secret history of hacking

The film also deals with how society’s (and notably law enforcement’s) fear of hacking has increased over time due to media attention of hacking (by way of the film WarGames as well as journalistic reporting on actual hackers) combined with society’s further increase in adoption of and subsequent reliance on computing and communication networks. John Draper, Steve Wozniak and Kevin Mitnick are prominently featured while the film additionally features comments from or else archive footage concerning Denny Teresi, Joybubbles, Mike Gorman, Ron Rosenbaum, Steven Levy, Paul Loser, Lee Felsenstein, Jim Warren, John Markoff, Jay Foster, FBI Special Agent Ken McGuire, Jonathan Littman, Michael Strickland and others”.

Finn Brunton on “Dead Media”

What the Obsolete, Unsuccessful, Experimental, and Avant-Garde Can Teach Us About the Future of Media”. Scopitone. The Euphonia. Bone music, Oramics, rocket mail, the Multiphone, optical telegraphs, scent organs, mechanical televisions, breath printing, calculating machines, magic lanterns . . . What does it mean for a communication or information storage medium to die? What can old media formats—dead, obsolete, experimental, or ahead of their time—tell us about the future of technological communication now? This talk will go back to Cambrian explosions in media types and the visionaries, hucksters, and lunatics who staked knowledge, fame, fortune, and sometimes their lives on the success of their technologies, and tell stories from the vast population of amazing projects that never made it.”

The men who crashed the world

‘The crash of September 2008 brought the largest bankruptcies in world history, pushing more than 30 million people into unemployment and bringing many countries to the edge of insolvency. Wall Street turned back the clock to 1929.

But how did it all go so wrong?

Lack of government regulation; easy lending in the US housing market meant anyone could qualify for a home loan with no government regulations in place.

Also, London was competing with New York as the banking capital of the world. Gordon Brown, the British finance minister at the time, introduced ‘light touch regulation’ – giving bankers a free hand in the marketplace’.

Hieronder deel 1 uit die serie.

What are Big Data – really!

Stephen Fry explains Cloud Computing

The secret life of Big Data

Ze laat zien dat ‘we have been dealing with big data for millennia, and that approaching big data problems with the right frame of reference is the key addressing many of the problems we face today’.
