Zoals ik verwachtte, gaat Oracle niet samenwerken met The Document Foundation aan LibreOffice. De Amerikaanse databasegigant roept ontwikkelaars op om zich op OpenOffice.org te blijven richten. Oracle wenst The Document Foundation veel succes met LibreOffice, maar het bedrijf houdt zich verder afzijdig van de afsplitsing van OpenOffice.org. Daarmee is LibreOffice nu een officiële fork van OpenOffice. Volgens Oracle blijkt daaruit dan ook direct de schoonheid van open source: ‘The beauty of open source is that it can be forked by anyone who chooses, as was done [by The Document Foundation]. Our sincerest goal for OpenOffice is that it becomes more widely used so, if this new foundation will help advance OpenOffice and the Open Document Format (ODF), we wish them the best’, zo zegt een woordvoerder. Oracle roept de open-source ontwikkelaars wel op vooral te blijven ontwikkelen aan OpenOffice.org. ‘With more than 100 million users, we believe OpenOffice.org is the most advanced, most feature-rich open-source implementation and will strongly encourage the OpenOffice community to continue to contribute through www.openoffice.org‘, zo stelt Oracle’s woordvoerder op Computerworld.
Die reactie van Oracle betekent niet dat het bedrijf hoopt dat LibreOffice zal falen. De keuze van Oracle betekent dat The Document Foundation geen gebruik mag gaan maken van de naam OpenOffice.org. Toen de stichting zich van OpenOffice afsplitste hoopten zij nog dat Oracle de naam aan hen zou doneren. Florian Effenberger van The Document Foundation laat weten dat de merknaam dan wel van Oracle is, maar dat het de gemeenschap was die dat merk tien jaar lang heeft vormgegeven. Hij hoopt dan ook dat Oracle zich alsnog bij The Document Foundation voegt, zodat zij de software weer OpenOffice.org kunnen noemen. Volgens Effenberger is er namelijk nog geen definitieve beslissing genomen. De Duitser stelt dat The Document Foundation de afgelopen weken zeer veel positieve feedback over de oprichting heeft gehad. Volgens hem bevestigt dat dat de ontwikkelaars de juiste stap hebben genomen. Volgens hem zal de afsplitsing van Oracle uiteindelijk zowel de gemeenschap als de software naar een hoger niveau tillen. Bedrijven als Google, Red Hat, Novell en Canonical steunen de nieuwe stichting. Behalve Oracle heeft alleen IBM zich nog niet verbonden aan LibreOffice. De Amerikaanse computergigant zegt dat ze wat betreft LibreOffice en OpenOffice.org even de kat uit de boom wil kijken. Bob Tarzey, directeur van analistenbedrijf Quocirca, stelt de vraag ‘whether Oracle and the OpenOffice brand should be so important to the breakaway community. There are multiple projects working on the underlying project anyway’. En: ‘Some will support commercial Linux distributions, like Ubuntu, openSUSE and Red Hat, and in a way, Oracle has every right to the same. It could’ve used this opportunity [The Document Foundation’s invitation] to show its open-source commitment. But it doesn’t have to’.
