Cloud: ‘t zal wel !

27 augustus 2009

CIO.com meldt: 'Perhaps all the hype surrounding products and services based in the cloud might be obscuring fact from fiction. Perhaps the disastrous economic environment and IT spending cutbacks have played a part. Perhaps all those concerns mentioned in the survey really are justified-much to the chagrin of cloud vendors everywhere'.

'Whatever the cause, now is the time for the marketing machines of cloud-based providers to refine their messaging and explain to IT leaders why cloud-based services will work in their enterprises. According to Gartner's 2009 Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies, cloud computing is perched at the summit of the 'Peak of Inflated Expectations'. 'It's no surprise that large enterprises are attracted to cloud computing because of the promise of an agile, scalable IT infrastructure and reduced costs', zo zegt Jason Needham, directeur bij F5. 'However, this survey shows that despite interest in the cloud, widespread enterprise adoption of cloud computing is contingent upon solving access, security, and performance concerns. As organisations turn to the cloud to increase IT agility, it is important for them to understand the technical components of the cloud and how the cloud will affect the network before developing an implementation strategy'.Vooral de prestaties zijn een zorg. Anna Liu, Associate Professor in Services Engineering at the UNSW School of Computer Science, stelde dat 'she was excited by Cloud Computing as it could potentially enable organisations to outsource a certain amount of their risks and costs and tap into new economies of scale. We saw a lot of hype and confusion, and decided to lead a team of researchers and actually get our hands dirty with this stuff. We put these services to a stress test to see if these cloud platforms really perform the way their vendors say they do'. 'With a simulation of 2000 concurrent users, we watched the cloud services scale up and respond dynamically to that demand', zo zei Liu. 'But we also found that the three platforms delivered wildly variable performance results as Amazon, Google and Microsoft trialled, added and dropped new features. Response times on the service also varied by a factor of twenty depending on the time of day the services were accessed'.
